Sociodrama is an action method that allows us to explore group issues in a safe, structured and spontaneous manner. It is used to explore social and community issues with children, teenagers and adults. It focuses on group concerns rather than on individual concerns.

Sociodrama utilizes group dynamics, enactment, improvisation and psychodramatic techniques such as doubling, role reversal, soliloquy, the mirror and asides.  It works well in a wide variety of settings- in the classroom to address bullying and inclusion, in residential treatment centers where confidentiality and emotional safety cannot be guaranteed, at PTA meetings and other community groups where people prefer not to reveal so much of their own personal story, and in professional role training with a focus on the shared professional role rather than the individual’s personal life.

Sociodrama has been used to train teachers, therapists, hospice workers, lawyers, medical professionals, hostage negotiators, etc, where practicing in live simulations can aid in skills development. It is also useful to teach socialization skills and interpersonal effectiveness to children, teens and adults. It can be used in therapy groups and recovery programs to engage and involve reluctant clients.

Sociodrama often focuses on large social and political issues involving oppression, social justice and social and political issues of a local and global scale. However, this workshop will focus on the areas in which Rebecca has over forty years of experience using sociodrama to address group issues in therapy and recovery,  for psychoeducation and for interpersonal effectiveness and communication skills training with children, teens and adults.
