The EMPTY CHAIR is a blank screen. It can concretize anything or anybody. The use of the EMPTY CHAIR brings the therapeutic work immediately into the here and now.
The EMPTY CHAIR can represent:
  • People (alive, dead, lost or imagined)
  • places or things
  • feelings
  • fantasy and/or reality
  • spiritual entities
  • addictions, diseases or behaviors
  • the present, past or future
  • walls, bridges and connections
  • choices

The EMPTY CHAIR is utilized to:
  • Encourage expression of feelings
  • Explore/clarify multiple parts of self or others
  • Dialogue with a Higher Power
  • Facilitate role reversal to better understand self and others
  • Improve interpersonal communication skills
  • Identify obstacles and supports to growth and change
  • Develop the Wise Mind
  • Address ambivalence about choices
  • Practice new and creative ways taking on roles in one’s life

This highly experiential workshop will include demonstration, practice and active participation.  Participants will learn and experience :
  • Several ways to use the EMPTY CHAIR that are helpful for the various phases in the life of the group including ways to build the group; integrate new members and facilitate closure.
  • How to use the empty chair to warm up individuals and groups.
  • The appropriate use of role reversal in individual therapy and group work.
  • The use of empathic interviewing to help individuals take on the role of the other.
  • The technique of doubling in individual therapy to expand the client’s awareness of underlying emotions and thoughts.
  • The use of empty chairs and space to concretize and explore relationships with people, sobriety, choices, time, attitudes, diseases and/or behaviors
  • The appropriate use of the empty chair to create distance and safety in working with trauma.

Participants will learn the differences between Sociodramatic and Psychodramatic Empty Chair and  their applications to specific populations/situations.

Continuing Education Hours

Hudson Valley Psychodrama, LLC has been approved by NBCC as an Approved Continuing Education Provider, ACEP #6789. Programs that do not qualify for NBCC credit are clearly identified. NYS LICENSED CREATIVE ARTS THERAPISTS, SOCIAL WORKERS AND MENTAL HEALTH COUNSELORS: In collaboration with the Sociometric Institute, Inc. this course provides 13 hours of continuing education.

The Sociometric Institute is recognized by the NYSED’s State Boards for Social Work and Mental Health Practitioners as an approved provider of continuing education for licensed social workers #0268, licensed mental health counselors #MHC-0096, and licensed creative arts therapists #CAT-0046.

This workshop offers 13 training hours towards certification by the American Board of Examiners in Psychodrama, Sociometry and Group Psychotherapy.  

HVPI is an approved continuing education provider for NYS OASAS.

There is a $25 fee for each  NBCC,  NYS Licensed Social Work, Mental Health Counseling and Creative Arts Therapy Continuing Education certificate.  Certificates for Psychodrama training hours and NYS OASAS are provided free of charge.

2 weeks notice: 50% credit towards future HVPI trainings
