Working with Addictions Track:
Action Methods
Clients often come to treatment because they are told to. They often appear defiant and demoralized and have hard time imagining life without their addiction. Clients often intellectualize their problems and behaviors and are disconnected from the impact of their behavior on themselves and others. Action methods such as Psychodrama, Sociodrama and Sociometry provide an exciting alternative to standard talk therapy by getting clients out of their heads and into their bodies. These action methods enable clients to step into their experience in here and now. Doing things in action cuts through rationalization, denial, justification and various other defenses that people use to avoid change. When you do things in action your body takes over and your mind gets out of the way.
Psychodrama, sociodrama and sociometry work particularly well with substance abuse and other addictions. Used in tandem with Motivational Interviewing and the Stages of Change, these action methods help clients work through their ambivalence to change, identify positive resources, practice new healthy behaviors and identify relapse triggers. They also provide clients with insight about how their behavior impacts others and how to imagine how others might be thinking or feeling. This track offers a series of workshops that will help clinicians gain tools to work with substance abuse and other addictions to achieve better outcomes.
