The Empty Chair:
An Action Technique for Individuals & Groups

The Empty Chair is a blank screen. It can be use as a warm up, as a piece of action/therapeutic exploration or as closure. It is extremely flexible. It can concretize anything or anybody. It brings the work immediately into the here and now.

The purpose of the Empty Chair is to:

- Encourage Expression

- Explore/clarify multiple parts of self or others

- Facilitate Role Reversal

- Concretize choices and options

- Role Train

The Empty Chair can be use to represent a person, a relationship, a role, a part of the self, one's strengths or one's defenses, a metaphor or an entity such as a higher power or one's disease.

Participants will learn ways to use the Empty Chair in working with the various phases in the life of a group. Some of those ways include how to:

- Integrate a new group members

- Assist in group building

- Warm group up to issues of common concern

- Address specific issues both psychodramatically and sociodramatically

- Address conflict in the group

- Facilitate closure

In addition, participants will learn how to use this powerful tool in working with individuals through the use of:

- Role reversal

- Doubling

- Concretization

- Spatial constructs

- Self doubling

- Role training

- Inner dialogue work

- Surplus reality

Students at all levels of experience are welcomed. Overnight accommodations are available.

Workshop fee is $135. Early registration discount: $110 if registration and check, money order or bank transfer are postmarked by April 16.

7 hours towards certification by the American Board of Examiners in Psychodrama, Sociometry and Group Psychotherapy, National Association for Drama Therapy and the American Society of Experiential Therapy.

This workshop/training offers CEUs toward national credentialing by National Association of Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Counselors NAADAC) and are accepted by NYS OASAS, National Board of Certified Counselors and towards recertification requirements for the National Registry of Group Psychotherapists.
